I can't remember the first word I recognized when I was learning to read. Everybody cares about the first spoken word and when you can spell your name but little importance is given to that one word that let the up and coming reader that words have meaning and power. I remember the first book I read, the one about the caterpillar that ate and ate until it became a butterfly. I don't remember the first book I was able to read on my own. I can't remember my first word the word that changes a young child's life and lets them know that from that moment on any question they have has an answer somewhere written down. I guess I am just stating the importance of literacy even in a technological era where everything is automated. I want my kids to read as soon as possible right out of the womb even.
Reading saves lives literally and figuratively
